Why was the battle of the Somme a failure/success?

It is widely believed that there are fewer darker days in the history of the British Military than the battle of the Somme. Such a battle depicts the true horrors of war, encompassing the realisation that thousands of soldiers would pay the ultimate sacrifice serving their countries.
